WHERE TO STAY

The Dylan Amsterdam, 384 Keizersgracht, Western Canal Ring; 011-31-20-530-2010, www.dylanamsterdam.com. The Dylan bills itself as the city's first "designer" hotel. Hugging the Keizersgracht Canal, it lives up to this label with sleek, modern furnishings and lavish upholstery. Doubles from about $444.

The Hotel Vondel Amsterdam, 26 Vondelstraat; 011-31-20-515-0455, www.hotelvondel.com. This hotel sits on a quiet street that is centrally located, close to just about everything. Doubles from $99.

NH City Centre Amsterdam, 7 Stadhouderstade; 011-31-20-420-4545, www.nh-hotels.com. Serviceable, clean -- and only slightly generic. This is a fine budget-choice pick, very well located and dependable. Doubles from $124.
